Rosetta Stone began with one man's dream to find a better way to learn a language.

The origins of Rosetta Stone can be attributed to the vision of one man who aimed to revolutionize language learning. Allen Stoltzfus, the founder, faced challenges while trying to grasp the Russian language using traditional techniques. This prompted him to embark on a mission to develop an innovative language learning method that would replicate the natural process of language immersion. In the late 1980s, Stoltzfus envisioned utilizing computer technology to create an immersive language education program that would incorporate contextual images and sounds, eliminating the need for translation. This groundbreaking approach was designed to cater to learners of all ages.

In order to transform his dream into a reality, Stoltzfus enlisted the support of his brother-in-law, John Fairfield. The advent of CD-ROM technology in 1992 made their project feasible. Together, they established Fairfield Language Technologies in Harrisonburg, Virginia, with Stoltzfus assuming the role of the company's first president. To enhance the program's visual and structural components, Stoltzfus recruited his brother, Eugene Stoltzfus, who possessed design expertise. The resulting product was named "Rosetta Stone," after the artifact that had unlocked the secrets of Egyptian hieroglyphics for linguists. This name is highly appropriate, as Rosetta Stone products now empower millions of users worldwide to achieve learning success.

In 2003 Rosetta Stone went global
The company strategically established offices in major markets worldwide and, in 2006, underwent an official name change to align with its renowned product.

In 2021, the company underwent a transformative phase as it joined the IXL Learning family of brands, which includes IXL, Vocabulary.com, Education.com, and Wyzant.

Currently, Rosetta Stone continues to deliver language-learning solutions in 30 different languages and cater to clients globally, with offices situated in six countries.
